F.lli Franchi is the historical brand name of Franchi Sementi, an Italian seed company founded in 1783 by Giovanni Franchi and headquartered in Grassobbio, in the province of Bergamo. The company produces and packages seeds for vegetable gardens, lawns and gardens for both hobbyist and professional use, with a catalog of over 1,300 varieties. [1]

Design and History

The F.lli Franchi symbol was originally designed by Piero Ottinetti in 1968. [2] Ottinetti (1927-2018) was an Italian graphic designer, photographer and illustrator, and a leading figure of the so-called “Milanese school” of the 1950s and 1960s. His clients included Montecatini, Pirelli, Philips, Salmoiraghi, OM, Busnelli, La Cimbali, Lorenz, Ceramiche Marazzi, Lebole and Cotonificio Cantoni. [3]

The company itself reached industrial levels starting in 1920, and in 1960 moved to a mechanized system of seed selection and packaging. [4] The 1968 logo design by Ottinetti therefore coincided with a period of modernization for the company, which had recently mechanized its production processes.

Franchi Sementi remained family-owned and operated for more than 200 years. In 2018, the company was acquired by Verisem Distribution, with Giampiero Franchi remaining as CEO of Franchi Sementi and becoming a shareholder in Verisem’s parent company. [5]

Meaning and Symbolism

The F.lli Franchi logo features a leaf and plant motif, reflecting the company’s core business in seeds and horticulture. [2] The mark incorporates stripe and reflection elements in its construction. [2]

Franchi Sementi describes itself as a “historical company” that has produced and packaged seeds since 1783, and positions itself as a leader in the sector and a synonym for quality seeds. [4] The company also serves as a community-level conservationist of numerous vegetable varieties, a practice through which it partially takes on the maintenance of planetary biodiversity. [4]

Typography and Design

Franchi Sementi states that all its packaging, including envelopes, boxes and jars, is graphically studied to guarantee an attractive and modern image, so that individual varieties are easy to identify at the point of sale. The individual product lines are highlighted by distinctive colorations that facilitate rapid identification. [4] The company’s “Europea” line, described as its “historical” line of greatest prestige, is packaged in a double envelope that protects the seed. [6]
