Ada Air was a regional airline based in Tirana, Albania, that operated from 1991 to 2007. It ran scheduled services from Albania to Bari, Italy, and overnight freight services for DHL, with its main base at Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza.[1] The airline was established in 1991 and started operations on February 3, 1992, with scheduled flights to Bari beginning two days later.[2]
Design and History
Ada Air was launched as a Franco-Albanian joint venture, becoming Albania’s first private airline.[3] The airline’s visual identity was documented in a small logo file, an animated GIF measuring 127 by 32 pixels, which was catalogued in airline logo collections during the carrier’s operating years.[4] A version of the logo also appeared in the German Wikipedia category for logos of defunct Albanian airlines.[5]
The airline operated a Yakovlev Yak-40 (registration LZ-DOM) and later a Yakovlev Yak-42 (registration UR-42377), both carrying Ada Air Albania titles.[6] Photographic documentation shows the Yak-40 in Ada Air livery on approach to Athens International Airport.[7]
Ada Air also operated an Embraer EMB-110P2 Bandeirante (registration ZA-ADA), which arrived at Southend Airport in January 2009 still wearing Ada Air Albania livery before being repainted with Star Airways titles the following month.[8] This aircraft, of Brazilian production, flew in Albania for more than 15 years under the Ada Air name before transitioning to Star Airways.[9]
The airline was closed in January 2007 due to unpaid obligations to the airport in Rinas, Tirana.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented sources do not provide an official explanation of the Ada Air logo’s symbolism, color choices, or design intent. The logo file itself is preserved in airline logo archives, but no primary source describing its meaning or the designer behind it has been located. The airline’s name references the historical region of Ada, and the carrier operated under the IATA code ZY and ICAO code ADE.[10]
