Belair (Belair Airlines AG) was a Swiss charter airline based in Opfikon near Zurich, operating from 2001 until it ceased operations on 28 October 2017 following the bankruptcy of its parent company, Air Berlin. The airline traced its roots to Balair, founded in Basel in 1925, and operated under the Belair name after being re-established in 2001.

Design and History

The Belair symbol was originally designed by Swiss graphic designer Armin Vogt in 1979.[1] Vogt (born 1938) trained as a graphic designer at the Josef Schnyder studio and the Zurich School of Applied Arts in 1954, and opened his own studio in 1970.[2] He is known for designing the 1967 Fiat logo, featuring the letters FIAT in italics within rhombuses, as well as the 1998 visual identity for the Basel transport company with its spiral symbol.[2]

The 1979 mark was created during the period when the airline operated as Balair, a Swissair subsidiary expanding its charter operations. When the airline was re-established as Belair in 2001, it adopted the Belair name and operated under the Air Berlin brand.[3] Airline logo collections document two distinct Belair wordmark versions from the 2000s, reflecting the airline’s visual evolution during its operational period.[4][5]

Meaning and Symbolism

The Belair mark is a typographic wordmark, with the logo database categorizing it among designs featuring cross and stripe shapes, reflecting its Swiss origin.[1] A Smithsonian collection item, a Belair Ltd. pilot’s badge, shows the Belair logo embroidered in white and black on slate blue felt with gold wire wings, indicating the mark’s use across airline insignia.[6]
