Marum International was a German apparel brand active in the post-war era, known for its clean, modern visual identity. The company’s logo, designed by Stuttgart-based graphic designer Hanns Lohrer in the 1960s, reflected the minimalist aesthetic that characterized German commercial design of that period.
Design and History
Hanns Lohrer (1912–1995) was a Stuttgart painter and commercial graphic designer who became one of Germany’s most successful graphic designers from the 1950s through the 1970s. He worked for major clients including Daimler-Benz, Porsche, and Bosch, and also designed posters for the Red Cross and the Federal Garden Show.[1] Lohrer’s work for Porsche in particular helped establish that brand’s visual identity during the 1950s and 1960s.[2]
The Marum International logo, created by Lohrer in the 1960s, employed a simple geometric form consistent with the designer’s broader approach to commercial art. Lohrer’s style was characterized by bold, graphic compositions, as seen in his celebrated Porsche advertising posters of the same era.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented interpretation of the Marum International logo’s specific symbolism is limited. What is verifiable is that Lohrer’s design work of this period favored clean, geometric compositions that communicated directly and effectively. His Porsche posters from the 1960s, for example, paired colorful graphic patterns with the product in a way that was both modern and memorable.[4]
Typography and Design
Lohrer’s design methodology, as documented through his extensive poster work, emphasized bold graphic shapes and clear visual hierarchies rather than ornate detail.[5] The Marum International mark followed this same disciplined approach, employing a geometric form that aligned with the international modernist design language popular in German branding during the 1960s.
