The Union of Bulgarian Architects, known in Bulgarian as Съюз на архитектите в България (САБ), is a voluntary professional organization for architects in Bulgaria. It was established on March 16, 1965, and is a member of the International Union of Architects.[1]

Design and History

The organization’s emblem is documented in its official statute. According to Article 10 of the САБ statute, the emblem consists of the abbreviation “САБ” crowned by a stylized Ionic capital.[2] The Ionic capital, a classical architectural element, directly ties the mark to the profession of architecture.

The emblem was designed by Stefan Kanchev in 1968, as documented on the artist’s official website, which lists “Съюз на архитектите в България” (Union of Architects in Bulgaria) with the year 1968.[3] Kanchev (1915–2001) was a prominent Bulgarian graphic artist, often referred to as the “father of Bulgarian graphic design” and the “master of the trademark,” having authored around 1,600 logos during his career.[4]

Kanchev’s work for the Union of Architects is also mentioned in a Bulgarian design blog that credits him with creating logos for the Union of Architects, alongside other notable marks such as those for TZUM, Bulgarian National Television, and the Union of Bulgarian Artists.[5]

Meaning and Symbolism

The official statute describes the emblem as the abbreviation “САБ” (standing for Съюз на архитектите в България) topped by a stylized Ionic capital.[2] The Ionic capital is one of the classical orders of ancient Greek architecture, making it a direct and appropriate symbol for an organization of architects. The statute also specifies that the organization’s official seal is round, with the full name of the association written around the periphery and the emblem in the center.[2]
