The Bund Freischaffender Foto-Designer (BFF) was a German professional association for freelance photographers, founded on 18 January 1969 in Stuttgart by Walter E. Lautenbacher and colleagues. Originally established as the Bund Freischaffender Fotografen, the organization later adopted the name Bund Freischaffender Foto-Designer to reflect the industry’s acceptance of the “photo designer” designation. In 2013, the association was renamed again to BFF Berufsverband Freie Fotografen und Filmgestalter, opening its membership to film creators and new professional photographers. [1] [2]
Design and History
The BFF signet was designed in 1986 by the Munich-based graphic designer Rolf Müller, whose office created it as part of a broader body of corporate identity work. Müller, a graduate of the Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm who had worked with Otl Aicher on the visual identity of the 1972 Munich Olympics, ran his own design studio in Munich from 1972. His biography documents the BFF signet among the marks his office produced in the 1980s. [3]
The mark is a logotype built from the initials “BFF,” rendered as three letters with a dot-based, geometric construction. The design belongs to a category of initial-based marks and reflects the minimalist, systematic approach characteristic of Müller’s work, which was strongly influenced by the Ulm school and Swiss typography. [4] [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The signet is documented as an initial-based logotype using the letters B, F and F, with a dot-based construction. [4]
Typography and Design
Müller favored sans-serif typefaces throughout his career, particularly the Akzidenz Grotesk, and his design approach was shaped by the Bauhaus and Ulm school traditions. [3]
Following the 2013 renaming of the organization to BFF Berufsverband Freie Fotografen und Filmgestalter, the association’s visual identity has evolved separately from the original 1986 mark, with new signets and communication designs created for specific initiatives such as the BFF Portfolio Show.
