Design Team (also written as Designteam) was a Belgian graphic design studio based in Antwerp, founded in 1969. It is recognized as the first graphic design agency in Flanders. The studio was established by designers Rob Buytaert, Antoon De Vylder and Rudy Verelst, with Luk Mestdagh joining in 1975 for a collaboration that lasted only a few years.[1]
Design and History
Antoon De Vylder (born 1940), a Belgian typographer, graphic designer and lecturer, was a co-founder of Designteam in Antwerp in 1969, together with Rob Buytaert, Luk Mestdagh and Rudy Verhelst.[2] The studio is described as the first graphic design agency in Flanders.[1]
De Vylder trained in typography, learning the basic techniques of typesetting and printing during his studies.[2] He later became a lecturer at the Plantin Genootschap in Antwerp and started De Diamant Press in Herentals.[3]
Beyond his work at Designteam, De Vylder collaborated with Herman Lampaert in 1990 to create the emblem and house style for the Flemish Community for the Flemish government, including the strongly stylized Flemish lion, along with a coordinated set of colors, the Galliard typeface, and specifications for graphic uniformity in government publications.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented details about the specific symbolism or design intent of the Designteam logo itself are not available in the research sources. The studio’s identity is primarily documented through its role as a pioneering graphic design agency in Flanders and the broader work of its founding members, rather than through detailed descriptions of its own mark.
Typography and Design
De Vylder’s typographic expertise is well documented. He is a typographer whose type family DTLRosart was developed with the Dutch Type Library.[3] He also designed an extensive range of books for Mercatorfonds Paribas using DTL typefaces.[5] However, no specific typographic details about the Designteam logo itself are documented in the available sources.
