Multicultural Arts Victoria (MAV) is a not-for-profit community arts organisation based in Melbourne, supporting culturally diverse artists across Victoria. The organisation was established in 1973, initially under the name Festival of All Nations, and later became Multicultural Arts Victoria.[1]

Design and History

MAV’s current identity was designed by Cato Purnell Partners, the Melbourne-based design firm founded by Ken Cato.[2][3] The new identity was launched at MAV’s 25th Anniversary Dinner at the Park Hyatt in 2008, with the organisation rolling out the new branding through 2009.[4][2]

The 2008-2009 annual report describes the rebrand as “a new and fresh approach, the product of an intensive process.”[5] The organisation’s executive officer at the time called the new identity “a new unique visual corporate identity” that “reaffirms the organisation’s role as the peak multicultural arts body in Victoria.”[4]

The mark is an abstract design featuring amorphous shapes, circles and lines.[6] Beyond this basic visual description, no official documentation of the logo’s intended symbolism or design meaning has been published by the organisation.

MAV celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023, marking five decades since its inception as the Festival of All Nations.[7] The organisation continues to use the Cato Purnell Partners identity, with its current website and communications featuring the same abstract mark.[8]
