Sotheby’s, the London-founded auction house established in 1744, has used a wordmark-only identity for its main brand. The current version was designed by Pentagram partner Abbott Miller and introduced in 2014 as part of a comprehensive identity program that also covered the company’s website, auction catalogues, magazine, signage and auction ephemera such as bid paddles.[1]

Design and History

Pentagram was appointed in 2011, initially to redesign the Sotheby’s website, but the project quickly expanded into a broader review of all communications materials.[2] The stated goal of the redesign was to maintain the image of a modern global brand while reflecting the heritage of a company that had been in business for almost 300 years.[1]

The 2014 wordmark replaced a previous Gill Sans-based sans serif logo that had been in use for 12 years.[3] That earlier identity had itself been a departure from a historic serif wordmark, introduced in the wake of a scandal involving the company’s CEO.[3] The 2014 redesign marked a return to a serif approach, using the Mercury typeface.[4]

As part of the same project, Miller commissioned type designer Akira Kobayashi of Monotype to draw custom Chinese characters for Sotheby’s Hong Kong wordmark, designed to pair with the Mercury letterforms.[1] The identity program also introduced a monogram for the first time, used as a profile image on social media platforms.[5]

Typography and Design

The Sotheby’s wordmark is set in Mercury, a serif typeface designed by Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones.[3][6] The broader typographic system established by Pentagram uses Mercury as the primary typeface, Benton Sans as the secondary font, and Freight as a tertiary typeface for display and headlines.[1]

According to Burch Studio, which led Sotheby’s in-house creative team in 2018, navy blue and Yves Klein blue are the defining colors of the Sotheby’s brand and are dominant in most communications.[7] The same source confirms that the Sotheby’s wordmark was designed by Pentagram in 2014 and serves as the core expression of the company’s graphic identity.[7]
