Enterprise Rent-A-Car, the neighborhood-focused car rental brand founded in 1957 as Executive Leasing Company, has maintained a green and white visual identity built around a distinctive lowercase “e” mark for decades. The company renamed itself Enterprise in 1969, and its logo has undergone seven documented evolutions since the company’s founding, with the most recent changes occurring in 2006 and 2023.
Design and History
The 2006 logo update, the seventh evolution of the mark since 1957, was developed internally by Enterprise with assistance from Monigle Associates of Denver. The previous change had been made in the mid-1990s. The new design featured the company’s signature “e” and allowed standalone use of the “Enterprise” name without “Rent-A-Car,” reflecting the growth of its Fleet Management, Car Sales, and Commercial Truck Rental divisions. The “Enterprise” name was made 20 percent larger in the new treatment for greater visibility and consumer recognition. The logo continued to use the familiar green and white color scheme but with a “cleaner, bolder, more contemporary look,” according to Steve Smith, Enterprise’s vice president of marketing communications. The rollout was phased in over three years, appearing first at new locations and branches undergoing renovation. [1] [2]
In October 2023, the parent company Enterprise Holdings rebranded as Enterprise Mobility, launching a new visual identity and corporate purpose: “Advance the world, one journey at a time.” The refreshed identity paid homage to the iconic dual parallel lines in the Executive Leasing logo from 1965. The new brand’s icon is an initial, lowercase “e” whose shape mimics a winding road, with the full wordmark and bespoke headline typeface containing the same smooth bends and curves. The sub-brands, including Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental, and Alamo, remained unchanged as offerings in the portfolio. [3] [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The lowercase “e” icon in the Enterprise Mobility identity is designed to evoke a winding road, connecting the mark to the company’s core business of vehicle rental and mobility services. The 2023 visual identity also incorporated the dual parallel lines from the 1965 Executive Leasing logo, a deliberate reference to the company’s heritage. [4] [3]
Typography and Design
The 2023 Enterprise Mobility wordmark uses a bespoke headline typeface that incorporates the same smooth bends and curves found in the lowercase “e” icon, creating a cohesive visual system across the brand’s applications. [4]
