TravelCenters of America, commonly abbreviated as TA, is a full-service travel center operator headquartered in Westlake, Ohio. The company was founded in 1972 under the name Truckstops of America (T/A) and today operates under the TA, Petro Stopping Centers and TA Express brands. In May 2023, BP Products North America Inc. completed its $1.3 billion acquisition of the company. [1] [2]
Design and History
The current TA logo consists of interlocking capital letters “T” and “A,” with the “T” rendered in blue and the “A” rendered in red. The letters overlap, with the “T” positioned slightly to the left and the “A” positioned slightly to the right. This description comes directly from a trademark application filed by TravelCenters of America Inc. with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. [3]
An earlier trademark filing for a three-dimensional configuration of a vehicle fueling station canopy describes the same interlocking “TA” logo centered on a white panel, with the “T” in blue with a white outline and the “A” in red with a white outline. The filing claims blue, red and white as colors of the mark. [4]
The company’s corporate flags, documented by the Flags of the World archive, display the blue “T” and red “A” logo on a white field, either alone or above the company name in black letters, with a registered trademark symbol beside the red “A.” [5]
Before the current mark, the company’s predecessor identity was quite different. In the late 1990s, the familiar “orange ball and T/A shield” signage of National Auto/Truck Plazas and Truckstops of America was retired when the two networks merged to form TravelCenters of America. Industry sources at the time estimated the complete identity change would cost upwards of $30 million for new signage, with all new signs targeted to be in place by mid-1998. [6]
Following the BP acquisition, the parent company began introducing the Amoco brand to TA fuel canopies. By early 2024, 15 TA sites had been upgraded with Amoco branding, with plans for 50 more locations to be converted before the end of that year. [2]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented symbolism for the TA logo is limited. The trademark filings describe the mark’s appearance and colors but do not assign specific meaning to the blue and red letters. The interlocking arrangement of the “T” and “A” is the primary documented design feature, as stated in the USPTO filings. [3] [4]
Typography and Design
The trademark record describes the letters as stylized capital “T” and “A” that overlap, with the “T” in blue and the “A” in red. The letters are described as interlocking, with the “T” positioned slightly to the left and the “A” slightly to the right. No specific typeface or designer attribution is documented in the available trademark filings or official sources. [3]
