Banco Zaragozano was a Spanish bank founded in January 1910 by José García Sánchez, with a distinctly Aragonese character and early branches in the Cinco Villas region.[1] The bank operated under its own name until 2006, when the brand disappeared entirely in favor of Barclays.[2]

Design and History

In late 1988, Banco Zaragozano underwent a change in its external appearance, or “face,” as part of a broader effort to modernize its services ahead of the 1992 single European market. The redesign was reported alongside simultaneous visual changes at the Heraldo de Aragón newspaper and the Caja de Ahorros de Zaragoza, Aragón y Rioja (which rebranded as Ibercaja).[3]

The logo is attributed to Spanish designer José María Cruz Novillo, who created identities for numerous Spanish institutions and companies including Correos, Renfe, the PSOE, Repsol, Endesa, and the Banco de España’s peseta banknotes.[4] A blog post from 2013 explicitly lists the “extinto Banco Zaragozano” among Cruz Novillo’s logo work.[5] The redesign was reported in the Anuncios advertising trade journal in its December 26, 1988 to January 9, 1989 issue.[3]

The bank’s trademark registrations with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office date to August 12, 1981, covering banking services both domestic and international.[6]

Meaning and Symbolism

The redesign was described in the trade press as a change in the bank’s “aspecto exterior” (external appearance), intended as a first step toward internal transformation and improved customer service.[3]

Typography and Design

The bank’s visual identity was analyzed in a doctoral thesis on the visual symbolism of Spanish financial institutions, which included Banco Zaragozano among the brands studied, but the full text is not publicly available.[7]

The Banco Zaragozano brand was gradually phased out after Barclays acquired the bank in 2003. By August 2005, 288 of the bank’s offices had already been converted to Barclays’ corporate image, with the remaining 50 rural branches scheduled for migration by mid-to-late September of that year.[2] The brand disappeared completely in 2006.[8]
