CIRCA5000 is a UK-based impact investing app that was rebranded from its original name, Tickr, in a comprehensive identity overhaul led by London design consultancy Ragged Edge in 2022. The new identity was built around a futuristic concept that imagines the world nearly 3,000 years from now, positioning the brand as a “force for positive change” within the fintech sector.[1]
Design and History
The CIRCA5000 identity was created by Ragged Edge, which also developed the new name and brand strategy for the app formerly known as Tickr.[1] The rebrand was driven by research showing that impact investing was perceived as an altruistic act, and the team sought to reframe it as a practical, self-interested choice.[1]
The name CIRCA5000 was inspired by the idea of a world 2,978 years in the future, a concept that also shaped the visual identity.[1] Ragged Edge co-founder Max Ottignon explained that the team drew on “well-established conventions” of fictional future corporations, including a globe-shaped logo, a graphic system and a blue colour palette, while aiming to elevate the identity “beyond satire” with a level of finesse often missing in those fictional brands.[1]
The logo itself features a planet-shaped mark with dynamic lines that convey speed and momentum, propelling upward and forward around the globe.[2] The studio described the visual identity as one that “reimagines an evil futurecorp as a force for positive change,” with the photography showing nature still standing and “the logo showing the world still spinning.”[3]
On a product level, the brand had to be “slick, credible and easy to use,” leading the design team to embrace “futuristic, techie details” for the app interface, while communications offered an opportunity to be more subversive.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The identity’s central concept imagines a world in the year 5000 where nature is thriving but humanity’s presence is uncertain, asking “whether we want to be around to see it.”[1] The globe-shaped logo symbolises a planet that continues to spin, paired with imagery of people-free landscapes and provocative copywriting that highlights the stakes of inaction on climate issues.[3]
The name itself was inspired by the naming conventions of fictional machines such as HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey and T-1000 from Terminator 2, giving the brand a sci-fi resonance that is unexpected for a fintech company.[4]
Typography and Design
The wordmark uses an unexpected italic treatment across uppercase letters and numerals, creating a subtle tension between the globe’s axis and the “C.”[4] A tonal transition from bold to light letterforms emphasises the year numerals in the name.[4] The overall mark was described as conveying depth and movement effectively without the use of a visible gradient.[4]
