Investors Diversified Services (IDS) was a Minneapolis-based financial services company offering personal financial planning, life insurance, mutual fund shares, investment certificates, annuities, and management and fiduciary services for pension and employee benefit plans. The company was established in Minneapolis in 1894 as Investors Syndicate and changed its name to Investors Diversified Services, Inc. in 1949.[1][2]
Design and History
IDS became a subsidiary of American Express in 1984.[3] On January 1, 1995, the company received a new name and logo, becoming American Express Financial Advisors. The change was made to increase recognition of the firm’s financial planning services, according to Homer Nottingham, marketing vice president of the Ventura division.[3]
Prior to the 1995 rebrand, IDS held multiple U.S. trademarks with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, with filings concentrated in Class 36 (Insurance & Financial) and Class 16 (Paper Goods).[4]
Designer Gale William Ikola (1937-2018), a graphic designer based in Minneapolis, is associated with logo design work in the late 1970s.[5][6] However, no verifiable primary source confirms that Ikola designed the IDS logo in 1977, and no reliable documentation of the specific visual features of the 1977 IDS mark has been located.
Meaning and Symbolism
No documented symbolism for the IDS logo has been verified from reliable sources. The 1995 transition to American Express Financial Advisors was explicitly tied to leveraging the American Express name for greater brand recognition, rather than to any documented symbolic meaning in the prior IDS mark.[3]
