JPMorganChase is the corporate parent of two flagship financial brands: J.P. Morgan, serving institutional and wealth management clients, and Chase, serving retail consumers. The firm’s visual identity has undergone two significant transformations since the 2000 merger that created it, most recently in 2024 when the company unified its name into the single word “JPMorganChase” and introduced a new corporate logo.
Design and History
Following the 2000 merger of J.P. Morgan & Co. and Chase Manhattan Bank, the combined firm used Chase’s octagon logo across all of its businesses, including the investment banking subsidiary that retained the J.P. Morgan name [1]. In June 2008, the company announced it would give separate but similar identities to its retail and institutional businesses. The institutional side adopted a wordmark reading simply “J.P. Morgan” in a thin, serif font, without the octagon, while the retail side continued using the Chase brand with its octagon logo [2]. A JPMorgan spokeswoman said the firm was “moving to a logo that more closely resembles the heritage J.P. Morgan logo” [3]. The change was formally introduced at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in late August 2008 [2].
In 2024, JPMorganChase unveiled a new corporate identity. The most significant change was the removal of “& Co.” and the unification of “JPMorgan” and “Chase” into a single word: JPMorganChase [4]. The new visual identity included a color palette inspired by the brand’s 270 Park Avenue headquarters in New York City, paying homage to the brown of J.P. Morgan and the blue of Chase [5]. The redesign was accompanied by a new corporate website developed in partnership with the creative digital agency Code & Theory [5].
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2008 J.P. Morgan wordmark was designed to reflect the bank’s history going back more than a century, with the reintroduction of full stops after “J” and “P” and a space before “Morgan” [6]. The 2024 redesign’s color palette drew directly from the brown and blue of the firm’s two flagship brands, J.P. Morgan and Chase, as a visual homage to their combined heritage [5].
Typography and Design
The 2008 J.P. Morgan wordmark was set in a thin, serif typeface [2]. The 2024 JPMorganChase logo uses a bolder serif design with sharp character tails and rounded elements, according to a design industry analysis [7]. The same source notes the 2024 logo features a more intense and vibrant shade of blue alongside a newly introduced brown [7].
