The Montreal Board of Trade, founded in 1822 as the Committee of Trade, was the English-speaking business association of Montreal for over a century and a half.[1] In 1992, it merged with the francophone Chambre de commerce du Montréal métropolitain to form a single bilingual business association.[1] The organization rebranded as the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal in 2016.[2]
Design and History
The earliest documented visual identity of the Montreal Board of Trade dates to the mid-19th century. A seal and an emblem of the organization were created by John Henry Walker, a Montreal engraver, sometime between about 1850 and 1885.[3] These wood engravings are held in the collection of the McCord Museum.[3]
In October 2016, the organization unveiled a new brand identity created by the Montreal agency Sid Lee. The rebrand included a new logo, bright colors, an updated website, and a new sub-brand called Acclr for its business services.[4] The creative direction was described by Sid Lee as aiming for a visual identity that was more streamlined, simpler, and more modern, reflecting the networking power of the organization.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented symbolism for the current logo is limited. The 2016 rebrand was described by the organization’s president as intended to reflect modernity, growth, and a spirit of collaboration.[4] Sid Lee stated that the creative teams were guided by the organization’s objectives in developing a visual identity that illustrated the networking capabilities the Chamber provides.[4]
