Yasuda Trust Bank (安田信託銀行, Yasuda Shintaku Ginko) was a Japanese trust bank headquartered in Tokyo, operating from 1952 until 2002, when it was renamed Mizuho Asset Trust Bank and later absorbed into Mizuho Trust & Banking. Its 1974 corporate symbol was designed by Kazumasa Nagai, one of Japan’s most prominent graphic designers.

Design and History

The bank’s origins trace to 1925, when the Kyosai (“mutual aid”) Trust Company was established. It was renamed Yasuda Trust in 1926, then reincorporated as Chuo Trust & Banking in 1948 under postwar occupation reforms. In 1952, following the enactment of the Loan Trust Law, the bank changed its name back to Yasuda Trust and Banking Company, Limited.[1]

In 1974, the bank adopted a new symbol mark designed by Kazumasa Nagai (永井一正). Nagai, who had earlier designed the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics emblem, was already established as a leading figure in Japanese corporate identity design.[2] A Chinese design reference book from the period lists the Yasuda Trust Bank symbol among Nagai’s works, dated 1974, with the bank identified as the client.[3]

The bank continued under the Yasuda name until April 2002, when it was renamed Mizuho Asset Trust Bank as part of the Mizuho Financial Group restructuring.[4]

Meaning and Symbolism

Documented descriptions of the Yasuda Trust Bank symbol’s specific meaning are scarce. The mark is recorded in design archives as a symbol for the bank, but no authoritative source detailing its intended symbolism has been located. Nagai’s broader design philosophy held that a logo should serve as “a vessel for a company’s soul, not just a label,”[2] but specific interpretations of the Yasuda mark, such as references to a rising sun or flower, cannot be verified from available sources.

Typography and Design

No authoritative documentation of the Yasuda Trust Bank wordmark’s typography or the geometric construction of its 1974 symbol has been located. The symbol is confirmed as a Nagai design from 1974,[3] but specific details about its form, colors, or lettering remain undocumented in accessible primary sources.
