Angry Orchard is a hard cider brand owned by the Boston Beer Company, the same company behind Samuel Adams. The brand launched in the United States in 2011 and its Crisp Apple style soon became the country’s number one hard cider.[1] The brand operates under the Angry Orchard Cider Company, LLC, based in Walden, New York, and maintains a 60-acre orchard and Cider House there.[2][3]
Design and History
The Angry Orchard visual identity centers on an illustrated apple tree with a gnarled, irritable face, described by the brand’s own agency partners as a “maverick mascot” and an “iconic tree.”[4] The tree character appears on the brand’s labels, with a bitten apple dangling from a limb.[5] The brand’s name and mascot reference the fact that the “wonky” or “angry” appearing apples used for cider making produce more tart and tannic juice, making them ideal for cider.[6]
The original branding was designed and developed by the agency Moxie Sozo, which documented its work on the brand’s development.[7] In a later packaging redesign, Moxie Sozo retained the tree and orchard environment in which the brand had built equity, while updating the illustration style to be more modern, sophisticated, and premium. The redesign also introduced a new logomark intended to communicate both the brand’s premium positioning and its craft origin.[8]
In February 2021, Angry Orchard unveiled new packaging graphics across its national cider portfolio alongside the launch of new Peach Mango and Strawberry flavors.[9]
In 2024, the independent brand design agency Vault49 created an illustration-led design for a new range of Angry Orchard canned cocktails. For this project, Vault49 re-drew and crafted the iconic tree, placing it front and center on pack. The agency also incorporated the iconic hanging apple above the crafted wordmark, with the branches acting as a framing device.[10]
Meaning and Symbolism
The “angry” tree mascot directly reflects the brand’s cider-making philosophy. Angry Orchard explains that the apples that look “angry” or wonky are actually better for cider because they produce more tart and tannic juice than pristine eating apples.[6] The brand’s name also reflects the gnarled appearance of aging apple trees.[11]
The tree character has been used beyond packaging as a brand personality. A 2020 advertising campaign introduced a grumpy animated tree that delivered caustic “truth bombs,” with the agency noting it leaned into “the playful attitude and sass from the brand’s iconic apple tree label.”[12]
Typography and Design
Custom typography has been part of the Angry Orchard identity since early in the brand’s life. A designer who worked on the brand created custom letterforms for Angry Orchard’s Cider House Collection in 2012, documenting three distinct lettering styles developed for the brand.[13] The 2024 Vault49 cocktail packaging continued to use a “crafted wordmark” as a central brand element.[10]
