Moxie is a carbonated soft drink with roots in New England, first sold as a patent medicine called “Moxie Nerve Food” before being reformulated as a soda. The brand is best known for its distinctive bitter flavor derived from gentian root extract and for its long-running visual identity built around a pointing male figure known as the “Moxie Man” or “Moxie Boy.”
Design and History
The Moxie wordmark has a documented history that predates the Moxie Man figure. Before 1907, Moxie Nerve Food was identified with a variety of lettering styles, with no standard logo. Around 1905, the company made a first attempt to standardize the mark with a design collectors now call the “foxtail” version. In 1907, the now-familiar rendering of the Moxie logo, featuring a sweeping crossbar on the “X,” was devised and subsequently registered as a trademark. From 1907 onward, this logo was used on labels and advertising. After World War II, the logo was standardized further into a format that has remained in use, with some variations, since that time.[1]
In 1911, the company introduced the “Moxie Boy” figure, a logo that has since appeared in different colors and styles. The character is depicted as a young man looking straight ahead and pointing forward.[2][3] The company used the “Moxie Man” logo alongside slogans such as “Make Mine Moxie!” and advertising jingles including “Just Make It Moxie for Mine.”[4]
Moxie was acquired by The Coca-Cola Company in 2018 from Coca-Cola of Northern New England, an independent bottling partner. At the time of the acquisition, Coca-Cola stated its goal was to “protect the heritage and regional culture of the brand,” and the company said distribution of Moxie would not change.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Moxie Man figure has been described as a clear-cut, Madison Avenue-type character pointing his finger at the drinker like Uncle Sam, an updated version of the drink’s young man mascot from the 1920s.[6] The current packaging uses an orange background with bold blue and white lettering.[7]
Typography and Design
The Moxie wordmark is characterized by its stylized lettering with an exaggerated “X” featuring a sweeping crossbar, a design element that dates to 1907.[1] A later trademark registration for the word “MOXIE” describes the mark as consisting of the word in stylized font with an exaggerated letter “X.”[8]
