The Red Bull logo is the visual identity of Red Bull GmbH, the Austrian energy drink company founded by Dietrich Mateschitz in 1984. The product launched in Austria on April 1, 1987, after Mateschitz spent nearly three years developing the formula, brand positioning, packaging, and marketing concept.[1][2]
The mark features two red bulls charging at each other in profile, positioned on either side of a yellow sun-like disc. The wordmark “Red Bull” appears above the emblem in a bold sans-serif typeface, with the letters “R” and “B” capitalized.[3]
Design and History
The Red Bull logo derives directly from Krating Daeng, a Thai energy drink introduced in 1976 by Chaleo Yoovidhya through his company TC Pharmaceutical. The Thai name translates to “red gaur,” referring to a large wild bovine species native to Southeast Asia. The original emblem depicted two red gaurs charging at each other in front of a sun disc.[4]
When Mateschitz partnered with Yoovidhya to launch Red Bull in Austria, he deliberately retained the Krating Daeng iconography, leaving the charging bulls virtually untouched. The logo was supplemented only by the English lettering “Red Bull.”[5][6]
No individual designer is publicly credited with the original emblem. TC Pharmaceutical has never named the artist behind the Krating Daeng mark.[4]
The logo has undergone a series of quiet refinements rather than a full redesign. Early versions carried the “Krating Daeng” inscription in Thai script, set in dark blue beneath the emblem. In the early 1990s, the English wordmark replaced the Thai inscription, moved above the graphic element, and changed from dark blue to red. The red outline around the sun disc was also removed. In the early 2000s, the colors became bolder and the emblem was scaled down slightly relative to the wordmark.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The two bulls symbolize strength, while the red color represents endurance and energy. The bright yellow sun rises behind them, representing vitality.[6] The image of two red bulls readying to fight is a typical Thai visual motif, reflecting the drink’s original association with Muay Thai fighters and its working-class consumer base in Thailand.[7][5]
Typography and Design
The Red Bull wordmark is set in a bold geometric sans-serif typeface. The closest commercial match is Futura SH DemiBold, with modified “R” and “B” characters. The geometric letterforms are designed to hold up at small can sizes and on fast-moving race liveries.[4]
The brand’s core palette includes a red for the bulls and wordmark, and a yellow for the sun disc. Red Bull’s sports properties publish slightly different color values than the core brand assets, with the variance small enough that consumers read them as the same brand.[4]
The slogan “Red Bull gives you wings” and the can design were created in cooperation with designer Johannes Kastner. The blue and silver can background was chosen to make the logo more noticeable.[6][7]
