The Frederick Keys take their name from Francis Scott Key, the Frederick County native who wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The team’s visual identity has used both fireworks and baseball imagery and, more recently, literal keys as a play on its name. The refreshed identity was unveiled in October 2025 ahead of the club’s return to affiliated baseball in 2026.

Meaning and history

The club began play in Frederick in 1989 and was affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles through 2020. It played in the MLB Draft League from 2021 through 2025, then returned to affiliated baseball as the Orioles’ High-A club in the South Atlantic League for 2026. The Orioles announced the return in August 2025.

This heading labels the club’s historic fireworks-and-baseball emblem; it is not a claim that the mark remains current. The Banner described the design as three fireworks above the lettering, while the club later referred to the firework elements in its previous logo. The emblem’s composition brought the bursts, baseballs and team name together in one badge.

The identity also had a documented anniversary variation. In 2012, the team announced a commemorative logo for its 25th season in 2013, along with throwback jerseys based on the inaugural 1989 season. The team’s announcement described the anniversary plans.

On 23 October 2025, the club unveiled a refreshed identity for its return to affiliated baseball. The system includes a “Keys” script wordmark, a “Frederick Keys” logo with two orange keys hanging from the tail of the “y,” a bold “F” with a key-shaped crossbar and a “Key City” wordmark. The script echoes the Orioles’ lettering, and the new palette uses orange and black. Attain Sports’ announcement credits Younts Design Inc. as creative partner.

The refreshed marks use keys rather than a likeness of Francis Scott Key. The separate wordmark and letter symbol also give the identity forms suited to different applications, in contrast with the earlier emblem’s combined fireworks, baseballs and lettering. The Banner reported on the design and its use of literal keys.

In 2026, the club introduced a fireworks alternate jersey and a related flag-and-fireworks logo. The design uses a blue gradient field, red fireworks and red, white and blue lettering; the cap carries a blue version of the emblem. The team described the alternate as a nod to the firework elements of its previous logo and its postgame fireworks tradition. The club’s announcement also gave 14 April as the first fireworks night of the 2026 season.

The 2026 alternate cap uses the flag-and-fireworks design, while the refreshed primary system has a compact key-shaped “F” mark as well as script wordmarks. These are distinct applications within the club’s identity, rather than evidence that the historic fireworks emblem remained its primary logo after the 2025 refresh.
