Radio El País was a Spanish private radio network created by the newspaper El País and the Grupo Prisa media group, active in Madrid between 1983 and 1987. The station launched on 14 June 1983 with a local FM broadcast, later expanding to a network of 19 local stations before being converted into Radio Minuto in August 1987. [1]

Design and History

The Radio El País logo was designed by José María Cruz Novillo, one of Spain’s most prolific graphic designers of the democratic era, whose portfolio includes identities for Correos, Renfe, the PSOE, and Antena 3 Radio. [2] The mark was created in 1983, the same year the station began broadcasting. [2]

Cruz Novillo’s work for Radio El País came during a period when he was also designing identities for competing broadcasters, including COPE and Antena 3 Radio. [2] His obituary in El País, published in May 2026, lists Radio El País among the broadcast identities he created, alongside La Cope, El Mundo, and Antena 3 Radio. [3]

The station’s visual identity drew on the newspaper’s established typographic style. The El País newspaper masthead, designed by Reinhard Gäde, uses a Clarendon typeface in uppercase letters with linked serifs between the “A” and “I”. [4] The radio brand extended this typographic approach into a broadcast context, though specific details of the radio mark’s construction are not documented in available sources.

Meaning and Symbolism

The Radio El País identity functioned as a direct extension of the newspaper’s brand, leveraging the recognition of the El País name for the new radio venture. The station was created “a imagen del diario El País” (in the image of the El País newspaper), indicating the visual and editorial continuity between the print and broadcast properties. [1] No documented symbolic meaning beyond this brand association has been recorded for the radio logo itself.
