Tele-Tape Productions was a New York-based video remote truck and studio facility firm active in the 1960s and early 1970s. The company is best known for its role in early videotape production, including operating mobile units and leasing its first fixed-location television studio in Manhattan. In 1974, Tele-Tape Productions merged with Reeves Sound Services to form Reeves Teletape Studios, a group of television studios in New York City.[1]
Design and History
Tele-Tape Productions was founded by a group of former Chicago television program technicians, including Dick Riedel, who began the company in 1960. By 1968, it had absorbed competitor Vicoa Corp. and acquired Detroit-based Jam Handy Productions, establishing itself as one of the few surviving mobile video taping firms from that era.[2]
In 1967, Tele-Tape Productions took a long-term lease on the 81st Street Theatre in New York City for its first fixed-location television studio, which was converted into a center for taping major network specials.[2]
Documentation of a specific 1968 logo design for Tele-Tape Productions is limited. The company’s branding appeared on its mobile production vehicles, including a red bus used for remote shoots in New York City during the 1960s, with the company name displayed on the vehicle.[3]
In 1974, Tele-Tape Productions merged with Reeves Sound Services, a sound and video post-production company founded by Hazard E. Reeves, to form Reeves Teletape Studios. The merged entity was owned by Reeves Communications Corporation.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
No documented symbolism, official color specifications, or design intent for a Tele-Tape Productions logo has been verified in available sources. The company’s visual identity appears to have been primarily functional, with the name displayed on its production vehicles and facilities rather than accompanied by an elaborate emblem or mark.
