XTVL, the Xarxa de Televisions Locals de Catalunya, is a network that distributes programming to local television stations across Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community. The network originated in 1999 as the Circuit de Televisions Locals de Catalunya (CTVL) and adopted the Xarxa de Televisions Locals (XTVL) name in 2002. The XTVL is a joint project of the Diputació de Barcelona, through the public company Xarxa Audiovisual Local, and the association Televisions Locals de Catalunya (TLC).[1]

Design and History

In March 2009, the Barcelona design studio Ruiz+Company created a new visual identity for the XTVL. The new logo takes the form of an asterisk and was designed to appear on screen alongside the logo of each affiliated local television station.[2]

The studio was founded in 1993 by David Ruiz and Marina Company and is based in Barcelona.[3] The identity was introduced at a time when the network was marking its tenth anniversary.[2]

Meaning and Symbolism

The asterisk was chosen for its habitual graphic function of highlighting the elements it accompanies. In this way, the logo reinforces the image of each individual television station while also allowing identification with the Xarxa, with the letter X highlighted within the drawing.[2]

The new image was intended to convey the values of solidity and experience of the entity, which was then celebrating ten years, while also adding a tone of modernity and momentum for the new stage.[2]

The asterisk motif is also reflected in the network’s trademark registration. The figurative mark for “Xarxa de Televisions Locals” was filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office in 2008 and is classified under design type 24.17.03, which covers asterisks.[4]
