Azote is a Turkish chemicals brand whose symbol was originally designed by Selahttin Sönmez in 1973, according to the logo database Logos Brands.[1] The mark is categorized as a dot-style, triangle-based, rounded logo with a bottle motif.[1]
Design and History
The Azote brand traces its corporate roots to Azot Sanayii T.A.Ş. (Turkish Nitrogen Industry Inc.), a state-owned enterprise established on 25 December 1953 by a Council of Ministers decision to produce nitrogen-based fertilizers and chemical compounds for Turkish agriculture and industry.[2][3] The company operated fertilizer complexes in Gemlik (Bursa) and Kütahya, and held a 47.25 percent stake in Akdeniz Gübre Sanayii A.Ş.[4]
In 1984, under Decree Law No. 233, the enterprise was renamed Türkiye Gübre Sanayii A.Ş. (TÜGSAŞ).[2] The Azot Sanayii trademark, along with TÜGSAŞ and other state-owned brands, was later registered with the Turkish Patent Institute and offered for sale in 2014 by Sümer Holding.[5]
Beyond the 1973 design date and the designer attribution, no official documentation has been located that describes the Azote symbol’s construction, color palette, or the specific design brief behind its creation. The visual details of the mark, including its dot, triangle, and bottle elements, are known only through the Logos Brands catalog entry.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
No primary source has been found that documents the intended symbolism of the Azote mark. The name itself derives from the French term for nitrogen, reflecting the company’s core business in nitrogen-based fertilizer production.[2] Any interpretation of the bottle or triangle elements beyond their visual presence would be speculative.
