Fravemøllen

Fravemøllen's 1969 logo, designed by Claus Rostup, reflects a clean, mid-century Danish industrial aesthetic. The mark likely draws from the company's name, which translates to "color mill," hinting at the chemical industry's focus on pigments and production. Its straightforward, unpretentious design speaks to an era when function and clarity drove corporate identity.

Farvemøllen (Danish for “The Color Mill”) is the name associated with a historic Danish paint and varnish manufacturer, De Forenede Malermestres Farvemølle, founded in 1845 by a circle of Copenhagen master painters. The company operated under the name Interessentselskabet De forenede Malermestres Farvemølle until 1962, when it became A/S Farvemøllen. It was acquired by S. Dyrup & Co. in 1974. The name also lives on today as a recording studio located in the former factory building at Dortheavej 4 in Copenhagen’s Nordvest district. [1] [2]

Design and History

The most documented visual identity of the company is the circular emblem used on its correspondence and building facade. The outer ring of the circle bears the text “DE FORENEDE MALERMESTRES FARVEMØLLE A/S,” while the center contains the company’s monogram “FMF,” formed by two mirrored F letters. This emblem was also used as a perfin (a perforation pattern applied to stamps for security purposes), registered under perfin number F 32. [1]

The company’s factory building at the corner of Dortheavej and Bispevej, constructed in 1934 for De Forenede Malermestre, carried the name “FARVEMØLLEN” on its facade, flanked by the company’s logo on each side. [1] [3]

An unverified claim attributes a 1969 logo design to Danish graphic designer Claus Rostrup. Rostrup was indeed trained in graphic design at Den Grafiske Højskole and worked as a designer at Magasin before becoming a prominent stage designer from 1968 onward. However, no reliable source confirms that he designed a logo for Farvemøllen, and this attribution should be treated with caution. [4] [5]

Meaning and Symbolism

The company name “Farvemøllen” translates literally to “The Color Mill,” reflecting its core business of producing paints and varnishes. The FMF monogram in the emblem stands for the company’s full name, De Forenede Malermestres Farvemølle, with the two mirrored F letters representing the words “Forenede” (United) and “Farvemølle” (Color Mill).
