VEB Lacke und Farben

VEB Lacke und Farben was the umbrella organization for the East German paint and varnish industry under the state-owned VEB system, based in Leipzig. Its logo was a stylized LF monogram, later adopted by VEB Kombinat Lacke und Farben (LACUFA), founded in 1979 in Berlin.

VEB Lacke und Farben was the umbrella organization for the East German paint and varnish industry, operating under the state-owned VEB (Volkseigener Betrieb) system. The organization’s visual identity evolved through several structural changes, from the VVB (Vereinigung Volkseigener Betriebe) Lacke und Farben in Leipzig to the later VEB Kombinat Lacke und Farben (LACUFA), which was founded in 1979 with its headquarters in Berlin. The Leipzig-based VEB Farben- und Lackfabrik served as the original parent plant of the VVB.[1]

Design and History

The VVB Lacke und Farben, based in Leipzig, used a logo featuring a stylized “LF” monogram. When the VEB Kombinat Lacke und Farben (LACUFA) was formed in 1979, it adopted the VVB’s logo in a slightly modified form, retaining the stylized “LF” without the accompanying lettering.[1] The LACUFA logo appeared on a wide range of products and promotional materials, including paint cans, glassware, and retail display items.[2][3][4]

The VVB Lacke und Farben was active in Leipzig by the mid-1960s, publishing promotional materials such as the “Kleine Anstrichfibel” brochure in 1966 under its “Gruppe Werbung und Messen” (Advertising and Trade Fair Group).[5] The VEB Farben- und Lackfabrik Leipzig itself was formed in 1953 from the merger of three existing state-owned paint factories in the Leipzig area.[6]

Meaning and Symbolism

The stylized “LF” monogram in the LACUFA logo directly references the organization’s name, standing for “Lacke und Farben” (paints and varnishes). The logo’s continuity from the VVB to the later Kombinat reflects the organizational lineage of the East German paint industry, with the monogram serving as a consistent identifier across the sector’s various administrative restructurings.[1]
