Gomen

Gomen is the international brand name of Gōmen Kabushiki Kaisha (江綿株式会社), a Japanese textile and apparel wholesaler headquartered in Osaka, founded in 1923 and established in its current corporate form in 1949. Its identity is presented as the wordmark GOMEN GROUP.

Gomen is the international brand name of the Japanese textile wholesaler 江綿株式会社 (Gōmen Kabushiki Kaisha), a comprehensive apparel wholesaler headquartered in Osaka. The company was founded in 1923 and established in its current corporate form in 1949, operating a group that covers production, wholesale, and retail across the fashion distribution chain.[1]

Design and History

The Gomen corporate identity is presented on the company’s official website as the wordmark “GOMEN GROUP” alongside the Japanese name 江綿グループ, with the tagline “総合衣料卸のゴーメン” (comprehensive apparel wholesaler Gomen).[2] The company’s official online wholesale platform uses the branding “GOMEN Online” and describes itself as a “総合デパート” (comprehensive department store) for apparel retailers.[3]

The company’s history shows that 1971 was a significant year for the firm: the Gomen head office first building was completed that year.[1] However, no official documentation has been located that confirms a logo designed in 1971 or any specific designer attribution for the Gomen mark. The claim that Japanese graphic designer Takeshi Otaka created a Gomen logo in 1971 could not be verified through available sources.

Takeshi Otaka (1926-2000) was a prominent Osaka-based graphic designer known for designing the symbol mark for Expo ’70, the 1970 Osaka World Exposition, and the packaging design for Nissin’s Cup Noodles.[4][5] While Otaka’s design work was extensive and included logos for organizations such as the Kansai Public Relations Organization (first logo, 1971),[6] no reliable source connects him to the Gomen brand.

Meaning and Symbolism

The company name 江綿 (Gōmen) combines the characters for “river” (江) and “cotton” (綿), reflecting the textile trade that has been the company’s core business since its founding in 1923.[1] The romanized brand name “GOMEN” is used consistently across the company’s official communications and online platforms.[2]

Beyond this naming connection to the textile industry, no documented symbolism for the Gomen logo has been found in available sources. The visual identity appears to consist primarily of the wordmark treatment rather than a pictorial symbol, based on the company’s official website presentation.[2]
