Maglificio Gianluca is an Italian clothing brand whose visual identity dates to 1968, when its symbol was designed by Italian graphic designer Dante Bighi.[1] The mark is described as a circle-shaped logo featuring a ball motif.[1]

Design and History

Dante Bighi (Copparo di Ferrara, 1926 – Milano, 1994) was a graphic designer, artist and collector who moved to Milan in the late 1950s after starting his career as an advertising graphic designer for the SIC Mazzucchelli Celluloid group in Varese.[2] Beginning in the 1960s, he created marks and campaigns for companies and institutions including Illy, Phonola, Supermercati PAM, Necchi, Ceramiche Pozzi, Sweda and the Università Bocconi di Milano.[2]

Bighi’s 1968 design for Maglificio Gianluca is documented as a circle-shaped logo with a ball element.[1] The mark is one of several identity projects Bighi produced during this period, a time when he was actively designing logos and coordinated image programs for Italian companies.[2]

Meaning and Symbolism

No official documentation has been found that explains the intended symbolism of the Maglificio Gianluca mark. The logo’s circular composition and ball motif are the only documented visual features.[1] Bighi’s broader design philosophy, as described by art critic Pierre Restany in 1984, emphasized a modern graphic style that illustrated “the essential motivations of his time, his city and his clients.”[3]

Typography and Design

Bighi’s 1984 self-published portfolio, “Traccia Personalizzata / Personal Mark,” presented many of his identity projects through their geometric construction, suggesting that construction and typography were central to his design method.[4] However, no specific typographic details for the Maglificio Gianluca mark have been documented in available sources.
