Saucony is an American running footwear brand founded in 1898 in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. Its visual identity centers on a distinctive mark featuring three dots arranged along a flowing line, a design directly tied to the brand’s geographic origins.

Design and History

The Saucony logo is inspired by the Saucony Creek in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, where the brand began and where water flowed around three distinct boulders. According to Saucony’s official brand pages, those three boulders today represent the guiding pillars of the brand: good performance, good health, and good community.[1][2]

The wave-shaped logo on Saucony shoes represents the river’s flow, punctuated by three boulders that became the three circles still used today.[3] The brand name itself derives from the Native American term “saconk,” meaning “where the two rivers run together.”[3]

In 2007, Saucony unveiled a new brand initiative and visual identity developed with the branding and design agency Desgrippes Gobé of New York City.[4] The new logo fused the brand’s classic graphic with a lowercased wordmark, which company president Richie Woodworth said was geared at looking “more inviting and friendly.”[5] The rebranding was part of an effort to clarify and amplify Saucony’s position in the performance running market, following research showing the brand “did not need to be reinvented” but needed “more clarity, consistency and a fresh visual image.”[4]

As part of the same 2007 initiative, the Saucony Originals casual line used the reactivation of a 1980s logo to capture the retro feel of the brand’s athletic shoe profiles from the past.[4]

Meaning and Symbolism

The three dots in the Saucony logo represent three boulders in the Saucony Creek, a constant echo of the brand’s Pennsylvania origins.[6] Saucony’s official brand messaging states these boulders now stand for the brand’s guiding principles of good performance, good health, and good community.[1]

The flowing, wave-like line that carries the three dots represents the constant flow of the Saucony Creek itself.[3]

Typography and Design

In 2024, Saucony began a rebrand that left the 2007 logo untouched but introduced a new typographic system. The brand switched its main typeface to Metrify by NaN, a contemporary neo-grotesk sans-serif, using its Ultrawide Black Italic and Ultrawide Light Italic as titling fonts in all caps.[7] The typeface was introduced by design agencies Against Time and Rosie Lee Creative, who worked on Saucony’s brand evolution, with Rosie Lee Creative continuing to implement the system across retail and digital projects.[8][9]

The typographic system was designed to unite Saucony’s performance and lifestyle product lines under one framework. Previously, the separate sides of Saucony’s business had developed different typographic styles, which muddled brand voice and led to visual confusion. The updated system brought all categories under one typographic framework.[10]
