Honkarakenne Oy, the Finnish log home manufacturer behind the Honka® brand, uses a logo that pairs the wordmark “HONKA” with a stylized letter “H” inside a rounded rectangle. The company was founded in 1958 by the Saarelainen brothers and has delivered over 90,000 buildings in more than 50 countries.[1]

Design and History

The current Honka logo is documented in the company’s trademark registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The mark consists of a rounded rectangle with a yellow background, black outlining, the word “HONKA” in black lettering, and a fanciful representation of the letter “H” positioned to the right of the word.[2] The trademark was filed in December 2007 and is owned by Honkarakenne Oyj.[3]

Some logo databases attribute the original Honkarakenne symbol to Finnish graphic designer Seppo Polameri in 1970.[4] Polameri (1936–2017) was a Finnish illustrator, painter, art director and graphic artist, as documented in his obituary in Helsingin Sanomat.[5] However, the obituary itself does not mention Honkarakenne or the logo, so the specific attribution of the 1970 design to Polameri cannot be independently verified from primary sources.

Meaning and Symbolism

Honka’s official brand communications describe the yellow color as significant to the company. According to the company’s own website, “The Honka yellow is the colour of hope and joy for us.”[1] The company also states that its purpose is to bring “the life force of the northern woods and sunshine into people’s lives.”[1]

The Honka® name itself is a registered trademark of Honkarakenne Plc, representing the family business’s expertise in log construction spanning more than 65 years.[1]

Typography and Design

The trademark registration specifies that the word “HONKA” appears in black lettering within the rounded rectangle, with the stylized “H” element placed to the right of the wordmark.[2] The design uses only two colors: yellow for the background of the rounded rectangle and black for the outlining, the wording and the “H” symbol.[2]
