Isy Bernard is a cosmetics brand from Germany whose logo was originally designed by German graphic designer Hans Karl Rodenkirchen in 1964.[1]
Design and History
Hans Karl Rodenkirchen (1926–2007) was a German graphic designer, artist and environmental activist who worked as a freelance graphic designer and designer.[2] He received commissions from the Solingen cutlery industry for company logos, cutlery designs, glasses and church equipment.[2] Born in Cologne, Rodenkirchen lived in Solingen from 1954, where he worked in the Wipperkotten on the Wupper as a versatile creative artist.[3]
The Isy Bernard mark is categorized among circle logos and cut logos, indicating a circular form with cut-out elements.[1] The logo was created during Rodenkirchen’s active period as a designer, which began around 1960 when he emerged as a designer of numerous cutlery pieces in modern to avant-garde forms.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The mark’s circular construction with cut elements is the primary documented visual characteristic.[1]
