Mississippi State University maintains two distinct visual identities: an official academic logo for university communications and a separate athletics branding system that has undergone several notable changes in recent years. The university’s official academic logo pairs the words “Mississippi State” set in a custom typeface called Bulldog with “University” set in Futura ND Bold, alongside the M-State symbol. The logo is designed to be used as one unit and is available in maroon, black and white versions.[1]
Design and History
The university seal, adopted in 1932 and modified several times since, serves as the formal identifier of Mississippi State University. Elements in use since the 1890s include a sword, symbolizing the military character of the early institution, and a key, representing the “key to knowledge.” The shield, symbolizing the federal role in a land-grant institution, has been part of the design since its inception. The seal is restricted to official university documents such as diplomas, certificates, awards and letterhead from the Office of the President.[1]
Maroon and white have been the university’s colors since November 15, 1895, when student-athletes played in the first football game.[2] The official maroon is Pantone 505, with the web color specified as #5D1725.[1]
The athletics identity has a more complex history. The interlocking “MSU” logo was a regular fixture on Mississippi State apparel during the 1990s and early 2000s, but was retired in 2004 in favor of the “Banner M,” a design said to differentiate the school from Michigan State and Missouri State.[3] The Banner M features an arced white banner reading “STATE” on top of a maroon block M.[4]
In 2008, Mississippi State launched a redesign of its primary and secondary athletics logos done by Joe Bosack & Co., a Pennsylvania-based sports identity firm. Mike Nemeth, MSU’s associate athletic director for media and public relations at the time, served on the redesign committee and said Bosack synthesized a spectrum of opinions into tweaks that modernized the marks while respecting tradition.[5] The university paid about $16,000 from a licensing fund for the new marks.[6]
In July 2023, Mississippi State unveiled a new football uniform featuring a script “State” logo on the helmet, replacing the Banner M that had been used since 2009.[7] Athletic director Zac Selmon said the script State “emerged as how to best brand the Bulldogs” and stressed that the M-State remains the primary mark for the university as a whole.[8] The script State was subsequently recognized as MSU’s official athletics logo and appeared on football helmets and at midfield at Davis Wade Stadium.[4]
In 2025, the athletic department brought back the retro interlocking “MSU” logo as an alternate mark. Selmon said the decision came after hearing from fans about the logo’s history and success, noting that “the ‘M-State’ is still the primary marker for the university,” but that the department wanted to offer options.[9]
Meaning and Symbolism
The university seal’s elements carry documented meaning: the sword symbolizes the military character of the early institution, the key represents the “key to knowledge,” and the shield symbolizes the federal role in a land-grant institution.[1]
Typography and Design
The official academic logo uses a custom typeface called Bulldog for the words “Mississippi State” and Futura ND Bold for “University.” The university’s brand guidelines specify that the logo must be reproduced from official artwork and never altered or redrawn.[1]
