Monroe University, formerly Monroe College, is a private for-profit institution based in New York City with campuses in the Bronx, New Rochelle, and Saint Lucia. The institution traces its origins to 1933, when it opened as Monroe Secretarial School in the West Farms section of the Bronx, and it adopted the Monroe University name in August 2024 after the New York State Education Department granted it university status.[1]
Design and History
The institution’s visual identity has evolved alongside its name changes. It became Monroe Business Institute in 1963, then Monroe College in 1990 after earning initial accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.[1] The Middle States Commission lists the former names as Monroe Business Institute (as of August 1990) and Monroe College (until August 2024).[2]
When the institution became Monroe University in August 2024, the new branding began replacing the Monroe College identity on buildings and elsewhere, with the new logo debuting on the institution’s website and on new flags and signage at its campuses.[1]
Two distinct marks are documented in U.S. trademark records. The Monroe College wordmark, registered in 2014, consists of the word “MONROE” in blue letters stacked over the word “COLLEGE” in gold letters, with blue and gold claimed as features of the mark.[3] The Monroe University wordmark, registered in 2025, follows the same format: “MONROE” in blue letters stacked over “UNIVERSITY” in gold letters, with blue and gold claimed as features.[4] The first use date for the Monroe University wordmark is recorded as August 26, 2024.[5]
The institution also maintains a collegiate seal. The Monroe College seal trademark, registered in 2007, is described as the official college seal with the school name, the date founded, and a stylized depiction of a book in the center.[6] A corresponding Monroe University seal trademark application describes a college seal with the literal element “MONROE UNIVERSITY FOUNDED 1933” around the seal and a stylized depiction of a book in the center.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The documented symbolism of the Monroe identity is limited to the book depicted in the center of the collegiate seal, a common academic emblem.[6] The institution’s official colors are blue and gold, as claimed in both the Monroe College and Monroe University wordmark trademark registrations.[3][4] The athletics department specifies these as Royal Blue PMS 2748 C and Gold PMS 123 C.[8]
Typography and Design
No designer or agency attribution for the Monroe College or Monroe University logos is publicly documented. The trademark records describe the wordmark format as stacked lettering, with “MONROE” in blue above “COLLEGE” or “UNIVERSITY” in gold, but they do not identify the typeface used.[3][4]
