Tokyo Zokei University (東京造形大学) is a private art and design university in Hachioji, Tokyo, founded in 1966 by Kuwazawa Yoko. The university’s visual identity has evolved through three distinct phases, each involving prominent Japanese graphic designers.

Design and History

The university’s emblem (徽章) is based on the Ionian spiral, a classical curve used in the capitals of the Athenian Acropolis. The mark was designed by Mitsuo Katsui at the time of the university’s founding in 1966, who linearized the spiral to emphasize the simplicity of modern design while retaining the spiral’s association with infinite development. The emblem was redesigned by Ikko Tanaka in 1993 when the university relocated to its current campus in Utsunukimachi, Hachioji, and the current design has been in use since 1996, the university’s 30th anniversary. The emblem’s construction uses a rectangle with a side ratio of 1:1.1, applying the geometric method for drawing an inscribed spiral.[1]

In September 2019, the university introduced a new tagline, “だれかで終わるな。” (Don’t end as someone else), alongside a revised logo mark. The new logo was developed by a team including visiting professor Kaoru Kasai (art direction), type designer Akira Kobayashi (typography), and university faculty members Hideyuki Fukuda and Yui Takada. The redesign retained the classic emblem graphic while fully upgrading the typography.[2][3]

For the university’s 60th anniversary in 2026, a commemorative logo was announced in June 2025. Designed by Kentaro Nagai, professor in the Graphic Design program, the anniversary mark forms the numerals “6” and “0” from the Ionian spiral, symbolizing forward momentum and the emergence of new talent, in line with the anniversary theme “Exploring Unknown Fields of Formative Art, Seeking New Talent.”[4]

Meaning and Symbolism

The university’s official description states that the emblem was designed with the belief that “a mark symbolizing the university should be a sign that fully utilizes the university’s individuality.” The Ionian spiral was chosen because it is regarded as forming the most beautiful curve among spirals, which have long been used as symbols of infinite development. The design was linearized to emphasize the simplicity of modern design while expressing the wish to construct something enduring.[1]

Typography and Design

The 2019 logo’s English wordmark was designed with reference to Erbar-Grotesk, a geometric sans-serif typeface created by Jakob Erbar in 1922, which reflects the Bauhaus influence on the university’s founding philosophy. The initial letters “TZU” were designed first, and a small caps approach was adopted after evaluation. The letter “Y” was based on the special form found in the Extra Garniture variant, and the symbol mark was slightly thickened to balance with the new letterforms.[2]
