The Mite Corporation was a New Haven, Connecticut-based manufacturer active from the 1960s through the 1980s. The company, which traced its roots to a 1961 merger between Teleprinter Corp. and Greist Manufacturing Co., produced electronic hardware and time-recording equipment under the MITE name, an acronym for “Miniature Industrial Technical Equipment.”[1] The firm was registered at 446 Blake St. in New Haven and was listed as inactive in later corporate records.[2]

Design and History

The Mite Corporation filed a trademark application for the word mark “MITE” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on July 10, 1968, and it was registered on December 2, 1969, under Class 7 (Machinery). The registration expired in 1992.[3] A separate trademark application for a stylized “M” letter mark was filed on May 28, 1969, covering “hardware used in assembling electronic units.” That mark also expired, as of March 1, 1993.[4]

Despite the unverified claim that Lester Beall designed a Mite Corporation logo in the 1960s, no primary or archival source confirms this attribution. Beall’s documented corporate identity clients include International Paper, Caterpillar Tractor, Martin Marietta, Merrill Lynch, and Rohm and Haas, but Mite Corporation does not appear in his papers at the Smithsonian or the Rochester Institute of Technology.[5][6]

Meaning and Symbolism

The company name “MITE” was an acronym for “Miniature Industrial Technical Equipment,” reflecting the firm’s focus on compact electronic and mechanical products.[1] The stylized “M” trademark filed in 1969 was registered for hardware used in assembling electronic units, indicating the mark was tied to the company’s core manufacturing business.[4]
