Africa Oil Corp. was a Canadian oil and gas exploration and production company that operated under that name from 2007 until May 2025, when it rebranded as Meren Energy Inc. The company was originally incorporated in 1983 as Canmex Minerals Corporation and changed its name to Africa Oil Corp. effective August 20, 2007, to better reflect the focus and direction of the company.[1]
Design and History
The Africa Oil identity was introduced in 2007 alongside the company’s name change from Canmex Minerals Corporation. The name change was announced in August 2007, with the company commencing trading under the new name and ticker symbol “AOI” on the TSX Venture Exchange.[1]
In May 2025, Africa Oil Corp. unveiled a new brand identity with a change of name to Meren Energy Inc. The rebranding followed the completion of the Prime consolidation, a transaction that doubled the company’s reserves and production in offshore assets.[2] The company’s CEO, Roger Tucker, described the Prime consolidation as “the natural catalyst to rebrand the Company given the transformational impact of that transaction.”[2]
The rebrand was developed by Burson Buchanan, an integrated communications and creative agency. The agency conducted a detailed perception study gathering views from key internal and external stakeholders on the vision and strategic outlook for the business before developing the new name and identity.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The name Meren is derived from an old nautical term representing the mooring of a vessel as it docks. According to the company, the name “mirrors the Company’s stability anchored by a diverse portfolio, strong cash flow profile and proven ability to work side by side with industry leaders on world-class assets.”[2]
The rebrand was also motivated by the company’s strategic evolution. According to Burson Buchanan, the company sought “a clear departure from a name that had become geographically constraining, particularly as Meren’s operational outlook has now widened.”[3]
Typography and Design
The Meren brandmark features both an emblem and a type mark. The emblem is an abstract derivation of an upper-case M, while the type mark uses a contemporary serif “suggesting a confident and reassuring maturity.”[3] The logo, visual assets, and brand guidelines were developed in close collaboration with the client.[3]
