Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp. (AQN) is a Canadian diversified international generation, transmission, and distribution utility headquartered in Oakville, Ontario, and the parent company of Liberty.[1] The company was incorporated in 1988.[2] Its corporate logo is a wordmark paired with a geometric emblem, distinct from the “radiant heart” identity used by its Liberty subsidiary.
Design and History
The current Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp. logo consists of the words “ALGONQUIN POWER& UTILITIES CORP.” in green, with a white letter “A” to the left surrounded by a box. The box is split between light green and dark green, with three white lines running diagonally across the back of the letter “A,” starting from the left in the middle of the upper half of the light green box to the upper right corner of the dark green box. Light green, dark green, and white are claimed as features of the mark in the company’s U.S. trademark filing.[3]
In October 2020, Algonquin’s regulated services division, Liberty Utilities, launched a refreshed brand under the single name “Liberty.” The company introduced a new “radiant heart” logo design, described as “a striking expression of how Liberty is putting its heart where it matters.”[4] The Liberty mark consists of the letter “L” formed by the stylized design of six concentric single-line hearts, followed by the wording “LIBERTY.”[5] The rollout of the new Liberty logo was phased, with the company aiming to be “substantially transitioned” to the new brand by the end of 2021.[6]
In January 2025, AQN completed the sale of its non-regulated renewable energy business to a wholly owned subsidiary of LS Power, marking a key step in its transition to a pure-play regulated utility.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Liberty “radiant heart” design “reflects Liberty’s commitment to its stakeholders and symbolizes energy and water that are the heartbeat of customers’ homes.”[4] The company’s core purpose is “to deliver sustainable energy and water for life.”[7]
