Chruchill Falls Corporation

The Churchill Falls (Labrador) Corporation Limited is a Canadian electric company that built and operates the Churchill Falls generating station in Labrador, formed in 1958 as Hamilton Falls Power Corporation and named Churchill Falls Corporation in 1965.

The Churchill Falls (Labrador) Corporation Limited, commonly known as CF(L)Co or CFLco, is a Canadian electric company that built and operates the Churchill Falls generating station in Labrador. The company was originally formed in 1958 as a subsidiary of the British Newfoundland Development Corporation (BRINCO) under the name Hamilton Falls Power Corporation, and it became known as the Churchill Falls Corporation in 1965 when the falls were renamed to commemorate Sir Winston Churchill.[1]

Design and History

The corporation’s logo, preserved in the historical record as the file Cflco.jpg, served as the company’s identifying mark during its operating history.[2] The mark was also reproduced on a commemorative medal issued for the opening of the power station, where the company logo appears in the center of the reverse side, surrounded by the legend and turbine blades.[3]

The company registered a separate “CF” wordmark as a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, with the serial number 72360311. That trademark, owned by Churchill Falls (Labrador) Corporation Limited, covered the service of providing electric power. The federal status of this trademark filing was recorded as expired as of November 4, 1992.[4]

In 2008, the provincial government of Newfoundland and Labrador launched Nalcor Energy as the parent company of Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, the Churchill Falls (Labrador) Corporation, and the Oil and Gas Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador.[5] The Nalcor Energy symbol was described at launch as embodying “balance, movement and transformation,” with curved, arching shapes conveying “the flow of energy, wind, water and oil.” The blue in the Nalcor logo drew upon the existing Hydro logo for continuity while also representing water, wind and the environment.[6]

Meaning and Symbolism

Documented symbolism for the Churchill Falls Corporation logo itself is limited. The commemorative medal issued for the opening of the power station depicts, on its obverse, a representation of water flowing through a turbine and generating power, with flowing water above a dam and electricity emanating, alongside the legend “CHURCHILL · FALLS / (LABRADOR) / CORPORATION · LIMITED.”[3] This imagery reflects the hydroelectric nature of the corporation’s operations, though it describes the medal’s artwork rather than the corporate logo itself.
