Energy Corporation is a Canadian energy sector brand whose visual identity has been attributed to noted Canadian graphic designer Burton Kramer. Kramer, born in 1932 in New York City, is a Canadian and U.S. citizen who founded Kramer Design Associates Ltd. in 1967 and is best known for designing the 1974 Canadian Broadcasting Corporation logo.[1]
Design and History
Burton Kramer’s identity projects include The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, CIBC, Teknion Furniture, Metro Toronto, National Resource Council, St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, Royal Ontario Museum, Copps Coliseum and Onex Packaging.[1] His work is documented in the Burton Kramer collection at Rochester Institute of Technology, which includes client publications, advertisements, posters, letterhead, brochures and reports from his firm Kramer Design Associates in Toronto, Canada.[2]
One source identifies an “Energy Conference” symbol designed by Burton Kramer at Burton Kramer Associates in 1986, described as a Canadian energy conference brand featuring circle and stripe shapes.[3] However, this source is a logo database and should be treated with caution. No primary or official source has been located that confirms a logo for an organization specifically named “Energy Corporation” designed by Kramer in 1990.
The RIT archive notes that Kramer’s early clients included Clairtone, The Royal Ontario Museum, Shell Canada, Reed Paper, and Canadian government agencies.[2] The archive’s scope and contents description does not list an “Energy Corporation” among his documented clients.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented symbolism for a Kramer-designed “Energy Corporation” logo is not available from reliable sources. Kramer’s most famous work, the 1974 CBC logo, features a stylized letter “C” in the middle of geometric shapes, representing Canadian broadcasting radiating in all directions.[4] This demonstrates Kramer’s characteristic approach to geometric, abstract mark-making, but specific meaning for an “Energy Corporation” mark cannot be verified.
Given the limited verifiable evidence, the claim that Burton Kramer designed an “Energy Corporation” logo in 1990 remains unconfirmed. The only documented Kramer energy-related work is the 1986 “Energy Conference” symbol, which itself comes from an unverified logo database source.[3]
