Marathon Oil Corporation is an American independent exploration and production company headquartered in Houston, Texas. Its current visual identity dates to June 30, 2011, when the company unveiled a new corporate logo ahead of the spin-off of its downstream business into a separate entity, Marathon Petroleum Corporation. The new mark replaced the long-standing hexagon shield “M” logo that Marathon Petroleum retained for its own use. [1]
Design and History
The 2011 logo was created as part of a corporate restructuring that separated Marathon Oil’s upstream business from its refining and marketing operations. The company’s official press release described the new mark as “an abstracted tri-color energy wave that symbolizes the momentum resulting from its upstream activity as well as the drive and innovation of the Company’s employees.” [2]
The identity was designed by BrandExtract, a Houston-based agency that had managed Marathon’s web presence for over a decade. BrandExtract conducted employee surveys beginning in February 2011 to identify eight defining brand attributes: nimble, driven, focused, innovative, energetic, socially responsible, global and ethical. The designers chose a new symbol to suggest these attributes and to signal that Marathon Oil was a new and different company from the integrated oil business it had been. The resulting logo is a symbol-enhanced wordmark, with the “energy wave” symbol kept subordinate to the company name. The wordmark includes “Oil” to express the narrowed upstream focus. [3]
This was the third graphical logo the company had used. The original corporate logo of the Ohio Oil Company, Marathon’s predecessor, depicted Pheidippides, the ancient Greek figure who ran from Marathon to Athens to deliver news of a military victory. That sign was mounted at the company’s Littleton, Colorado research lab from 1956 to 1963, when the company changed its name to Marathon Oil Company. [4] The second logo, a modified hexagon with an “M,” was designed in 1962 by Lippincott & Margulies when the Ohio Oil Company name was changed. [5]
The 2011 identity launch was staged for high employee impact, with design secrecy maintained until the June 30 unveiling. The new corporate website went live July 1, 2011, and large-format print ads appeared in community and national newspapers. [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The tri-color energy wave symbol was designed to represent the momentum of Marathon Oil’s upstream activity and the drive and innovation of its employees, according to the company’s official announcement. [2] The wave symbol also became the source of the visual tools, including curves and colors, used to construct the broader corporate visual system. [3]
The blue wave icon generated public discussion about whether the imagery suggested water rather than oil. A consumer survey conducted shortly after the launch found that 52% of respondents who saw the icon without the company name thought of water, the ocean or fluid, while only 1% mentioned oil. When told the icon was part of an oil company’s logo, 63% said the logo did not match what an oil company promises, sells and stands for. [6]
Typography and Design
The 2011 logo is a symbol-enhanced wordmark, with the energy wave symbol designed to be subordinate to the company name. The wordmark treatment was chosen to express Marathon Oil’s narrowed upstream focus by including “Oil” in the logo. [3] Design commentary at the time noted criticism of the typography’s kerning, though the company has not published official specifications for the wordmark’s typeface. [6]
