Club Selector is a nightclub brand from Japan whose symbol was originally designed by graphic designer Takeshi Otaka in 1964. [1]

Design and History

Takeshi Otaka (1926-2000) was a prominent Japanese graphic designer based in Osaka. [2] He founded his own design studio in 1953 and is best known for creating the symbol mark for Expo ’70 in Osaka, the package design for Nissin’s Cup Noodles, and the character design for Kansai International Airport. [2] His work on the Expo ’70 symbol, a cherry blossom motif with five petals representing the five continents, was selected in 1966. [2]

The Club Selector mark was created by Otaka in 1964, during a period when he was already an established figure in Japanese graphic design. [1] The logo is categorized as a cut-style mark with dot elements, reflecting the geometric approach common in Otaka’s work from this era. [1]

Meaning and Symbolism

Documented symbolism for the Club Selector mark itself is limited. The logo’s visual characteristics, described as a cut shape with dot elements, suggest a simplified geometric form. [1] Otaka’s broader design philosophy, as demonstrated in his Expo ’70 symbol where five petals represented the five continents and the central circle represented Japan, shows his tendency toward distilled geometric symbolism.
