Crea-Filmi was a Finnish film production company known for its television commercials and advertising films. The company’s logo, designed in 1966 by Finnish graphic designer Kyösti Varis, is a notable example of mid-century Finnish commercial design. Varis, born in 1933 in Joensuu, is regarded as one of Finland’s most prominent graphic designers, known for his posters and logos. [1]
Design and History
The Crea-Filmi symbol was originally designed by Kyösti Varis in 1966. [2] The mark is described as a circle-shaped logo featuring dot elements and an eye-and-ball motif. [2] The company operated as a film production brand in Finland, with its activities documented from the late 1960s through the early 2000s. [3]
Crea-Filmi was founded by Kyösti Varesvuo, who also led the company during its most prominent years as a leading Finnish television commercial producer. [4] In the early 1970s, the company established a subsidiary specializing in film sound, led by sound designer Erkki Kivi. [5] The company produced commercials for major Finnish clients, including Finnair in 1969 and Shell in 1984. [6]
In 2003, Crea Filmi merged with another Varesvuo company, and the traditional Crea Filmi name was retired from the advertising production field. [7]
Meaning and Symbolism
Varis described himself as a graphic designer of marks and posters, and his posters were characterized by sparse technique and pictorially simplified forms. [1] The Crea-Filmi mark, with its circular composition and eye-and-ball motif, reflects this minimalist approach, though no official documentation of the logo’s intended symbolism has been published.
