FreemanWhite was a Charlotte, North Carolina-based architecture, engineering, and planning firm focused on healthcare design. Founded in 1892, the firm operated under the FreemanWhite name for over a century before being acquired by Jacksonville, Florida-based Haskell in November 2014, after which it retained its name and brand as a Haskell company.[1][2]
Design and History
The FreemanWhite logo was designed by Malcolm Grear Designers, a Providence, Rhode Island firm founded in 1960 by Malcolm Grear, in 1999.[3][4] The mark is described in the firm’s trademark registration as consisting of the letter “W” with the letter “F” superimposed over the left-hand portion of the “W,” forming a combined monogram.[5]
The design has been noted for its use of negative space, a characteristic that has led to its inclusion in design collections highlighting logos that employ counterforms effectively.[3] A design reference book characterizes the logo as displaying “economy and elegance,” qualities associated with the work of Malcolm Grear Designers.[3]
Following the 2014 acquisition, FreemanWhite operated as “FreemanWhite, a Haskell Company,” and a new trademark for the combined name was filed in June 2016.[6] The firm was later fully integrated into the Haskell brand.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The FW monogram directly references the firm’s name, FreemanWhite, as indicated by the pseudo mark listed in its trademark registration.[5] The overlapping F and W letters create a compact, geometric device that serves as a visual shorthand for the full company name.
