Design and History

In 2007, Popcorn Taxi launched a new website featuring a fresh logo designed by Mark Gowing design. The new identity was introduced alongside the site’s expanded features, which included online ticket sales, trailers, photos, and video podcasts of Popcorn Taxi events.[3]

Mark Gowing is a Sydney-based artist, typographer, and type designer. He is the founder and director of The Letters, a type company specializing in expressive fonts, and has produced creative projects for leading organizations and institutions with a focus on the arts. His typographic work has been exhibited globally by institutions including the Alliance Graphique Internationale, the New York Type Directors Club, and the Tokyo Type Directors Club.[4][5]

The Popcorn Taxi logo is included in Gowing’s “Trademarks 4, var.” collection, a portfolio of assorted trademarks and logotypes featured on his Alliance Graphique Internationale profile.[4]

Meaning and Symbolism

The name “Popcorn Taxi” was conceived by founders Doust and Wheeldon to reflect their concept of demystifying movie making for professionals and fans alike. The event was designed as a not-for-profit, non-competitive gathering where audiences were encouraged to guide conversations with filmmakers.[2]

While the logo’s specific visual elements are not documented in available sources, the brand name itself combines the casual, cinematic association of popcorn with the idea of a mobile, accessible experience, reflecting the event’s approachable and audience-driven format.
