American Giant is an American apparel brand founded in 2011 by Bayard Winthrop, known for its domestically manufactured clothing and the Classic Full Zip hoodie that was dubbed “The Greatest Hoodie Ever Made.”[1] The company launched its first product in 2012 with a mission to rebuild a sweatshirt using high-quality fabrics and a fully U.S.-based supply chain.[2]
Design and History
American Giant’s primary logo mark is a combination of the letters A and G, designed to resemble a branding iron that a farmer might have used in the early twentieth century, serving as a personal seal denoting pride of ownership.[3] The branding-iron concept aligns with the company’s emphasis on American manufacturing and durable, long-lasting goods.
The brand also developed an alternate logo that integrates the tagline “Out of many, one,” an English translation of “E Pluribus Unum,” the motto found on the official seal of the United States.[3] This alternate treatment reinforces the company’s patriotic and domestic-production positioning.
The logo appears on product labels and packaging throughout the brand’s apparel line, including custom leather patches on denim items.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The A and G combination mark draws on the visual language of agricultural branding irons, historically used by farmers as a personal seal indicating pride of ownership.[3] This reference connects the logo to themes of craftsmanship, permanence, and American rural heritage, consistent with the brand’s focus on quality and domestic production.
The alternate “Out of many, one” logo references the U.S. national motto, symbolizing strength and unity.[3]
