Fleischkombinat Erfurt was a state-owned meat processing enterprise (VEB) in the German Democratic Republic, based in Erfurt, Thuringia. The logo for this East German food producer was designed in 1965 by Dietrich & Antje Kniffka, according to the only available source documenting the mark’s origin.
Design and History
The Fleischkombinat Erfurt symbol was originally designed by Dietrich & Antje Kniffka in 1965.[1] The logo is described as a circle-shaped mark with shadow and cut elements.[1]
The enterprise operated as “VEB Fleischkombinat Erfurt” during the DDR era, when it became the first large slaughterhouse of the GDR and exported beyond the borders of the then Erfurt district.[2] The operation was part of a concentration of the meat industry in the Erfurt district that began in 1963, with the Erfurt combine covering the southern area of the district.[3]
The facility was shut down in 1992, and the site later became the subject of redevelopment plans for a school campus.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logo’s circle shape with shadow and cut elements is the only visual characteristic confirmed by available sources.[1]
