Arber is a Los Angeles-based plant wellness brand founded by Vanessa Dawson, offering EPA-registered biological pesticides and organic plant foods for home gardeners. The company launched on Earth Day, April 22, 2021, with pre-orders beginning at growarber.com. Its product line includes bio-insecticides, bio-fungicides, bio-protectants, and plant foods formulated with active microbial ingredients. [1] [2]
Design and History
Arber’s visual identity was developed collaboratively. The company worked with the team at GEO to develop its brand look and feel, while Branch Creative developed the product packaging. [3]
The brand name is inspired by Agnes Arber, a famed botanist and plant morphologist. This botanical connection is carried through the logo design itself. [3]
The packaging system, designed by Branch Creative, uses concentrate bottles that are modern, monochromatic, and minimal, finished in natural earth-tone colors with a matte finish. The design was described as “wildly intentional, inspired by the earth.” [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Arber logo is a bold, condensed serif wordmark. The legs of both “R” characters are completely irregular, cut to mimic the silhouette of a leaf. This botanical nod in the logo ties back to the company’s namesake, Agnes Arber, the botanist and plant morphologist. [3]
The packaging design received notable recognition when guest shark Candace Nelson praised it on an episode of Shark Tank, saying, “The packaging is beautiful. I just felt like I was opening a special gift when I opened this box.” The custom corrugated mailer was designed by Salazar Packaging with a unique opening and closure style, along with insert components that hold and showcase the product. [4]
Typography and Design
The Arber wordmark uses a bold, condensed serif typeface. The most distinctive feature is the treatment of the letter “R,” where the legs are intentionally irregular and cut to resemble a leaf silhouette, reinforcing the brand’s botanical heritage. [3]
Beyond the core product packaging by Branch Creative, Doris Dev partnered with Arber to design and develop packaging for the Soil Conditioner and Applicator product extension, focusing on fully compostable packaging with an ergonomic vessel design. [5]
