BBB Furniture, also known as BBB Italia or BBB Bonacina, is an Italian furniture brand founded in 1949 during the expansion of nascent Italian design.[1] The company’s visual identity was created by Italo Lupi, a prominent Italian architect and graphic designer who also designed logos for Miu Miu, Fiorucci, and Cinelli.[2][3]

Design and History

Italo Lupi is credited as the creator of the BBB brand identity.[2] The company itself confirmed this attribution in a tribute published after Lupi’s death in June 2023, describing him as the “creator of the BBB identity.”[2] Multiple Italian design publications and news outlets also list BBB Bonacina among the logos Lupi designed during his career.[3][4][5]

Lupi, born in Cagliari in 1934 and trained as an architect at the Politecnico di Milano, began his career in the 1960s at the Rinascente development office alongside Mario Bellini.[3] He later served as art director for Domus and as director and art director of Abitare from 1992 to 2007.[4] His career was recognized with three Compassi d’Oro awards.[4]

Lupi’s design philosophy emphasized simplicity and clarity. He stated: “A good design is simple, understandable by all, free from unnecessary complications, it precisely responds to the needs for which it was created and for which it is to be used.”[2] He also described his working method as a “constant search for simplicity of forms and their immediacy,” noting that “the objectives must be clarity and hierarchy.”[3]

Meaning and Symbolism

The BBB brand has been described by the company as having “its own special identity” within the Italian design industry, positioning itself between experimentation and tradition rather than following trends.[1] The company’s official history notes that BBB “acquired visibility thanks to its strong identity.”[6] However, no official source documents specific symbolic meaning in the logo’s letterforms or any particular visual elements beyond the “BBB” wordmark itself.

The brand is historically associated with the Bonacina name, with sources referring to the company as BBB Bonacina, BBB Italia, or Emmebonacina.[7] The company has collaborated with notable designers including Gio Ponti, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, and De Pas D’Urbino Lomazzi.[8]
