Lucassen was a Dutch furniture manufacturer active in the 1960s. Its visual identity was created in 1967 by the Dutch design agency Tel Design, a firm founded by industrial designers Emile Truijen and Jan Lucassen (no relation to the furniture company).[1]

Design and History

Tel Design originated in November 1962, when Emile Truijen, an industrial designer and teacher at the Eindhoven Academy of Industrial Design, began collaborating with Jan Lucassen, one of his former students.[2] In its early years, the Truijen-Lucassen bureau focused primarily on industrial assignments, designing utensils, furniture and medical equipment.[2][1]

The growing agency was renamed Tel Design Association in 1965, with the names of Truijen and Lucassen merged into the new title.[2][1] The Lucassen furniture logo was produced by this agency in 1967, during the period when Tel Design was building a reputation for comprehensive corporate identity work in the Netherlands.[1]

Tel Design later became widely known for its large-scale house style program for the Dutch Railways (NS), for which graphic designer Gert Dumbar was brought in as a partner.[3] The agency also worked on the corporate identity for the Dutch postal service PTT together with Total Design.[3]

Meaning and Symbolism

Documented descriptions of the specific symbolism or design intent behind the 1967 Lucassen furniture logo are not available in the research sources. What is verifiable is the context of its creation: Tel Design operated on the principle that design should not be the work of a single person, but rather presented under a common agency name, with specialists in industrial design, graphic design and interior architecture working together.[4] The agency’s founders observed that most Dutch companies of the era lacked a coherent, outward-facing visual character, with advertisements, stationery, exhibitions and products showing little consistency in design.[4]

Jan Lucassen, the co-founder of Tel Design, left the agency around 1977 or 1978 to start his own practice, and later served as director of the Eindhoven Academy of Industrial Design from 1983 to 1998.[5][3]
